Claire Simpson Jones, a landscape painter, blends her concern for the environment with her deeplyy rooted passion for nature. Her intention is to draw attention to the beauty and blessings of our rapidly vanishing landscapes. Her series Hanging By A Thread focuses on the flora and fauna currently endangered by diminishing habitats.From numerous small plein air paintings, sketches and research, Simpson Jones creates studio paintings and relief pieces frequently inspired by the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. Her paintings consist of layers of watercolor glazes, often combining handmade papers and acrylics, adding detail and texture that give her work the effect of rich textured light.
Simpson Jones traveled extensively throughout the world before settling in Western North Carolina. She worked for several years as an illustrator and graphic designer before turning to studio painting. She holds a BFA from Florida Atlantic University, combining her study of the arts at California college of Arts and Crafts and Ontario College of Art. She is a signature member of the North Carolina Watercolor Society, a member of Nature Conservancy, the Sierra Club, and World Wildlife Federation. She has been the art teacher at North Buncombe High School for 14 years, helping students to draw on their own inner creative energy.
Her work is in the collections of The Grove Park Inn, The Renaissance Hotel, Givens Estates, Hendersonville Country Club, Home Trust Bank, and several private collectors. Her paintings and mixed media pieces are represented by The Design Gallery in Burnsville, Twigs and Leaves in Waynesville, and Sabbath Day Woods in Canton.
